Refugee facts

1. A refugee is a person who is outside his or her country of nationality and can't return due to a well-founded fear of persecution because of his or her race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group

2. At the end of 2013, there were 16.7 million refugees worldwide, with the highest number in Pakistan (1.6 million).

3. It’s estimated that 50% of refugees are under the age of 18.

4. An asylum seeker is a person who is looking to be recognized as a refugee, but has not yet received formal refugee status. The most asylum seekers come from Pakistan and Iran.

5. Internally displaced people (IDPs) are those who have been forced to leave their homes as a result of armed conflict, generalized violence or human rights violations. Unlike refugees they have not crossed an international border.

  1. In 2011, there were roughly 26.4 million people displaced internally (within their country of origin) by conflict.
  2. Under international law, refugees are not allowed to be forced back to the countries they have fled.
  3. Developing countries host 80% of the world’s refugees.
  4. In 2012, the region with the most number of IDPs was in the Middle East and North Africa (2.5 million people).
  5. A total of 895,000 individual applications for asylum or refugee status were submitted to governments and UNHCR offices in 166 countries in 2011. Roughly 11% of these requests were fulfilled.

Global warming speech

Have you ever thought of the polar ice caps melting? well guess what it’s happening and it’s called global warming and I think it is bad. My name is Alfonso. I’ll tell you ways you could help at the end of the speech. In my opinion global warming is bad because it is getting rid of animals habitats like polar bears ETC and did you know that 2016 is the hottest year on record?

Also, it is well known that Global warming is a continuously increasing environmental issue all over the world. And all the countries worldwide are responsible for it this problem.
Actually global warming is a global increase in the temperature of the earth because of our daily activities. Our various activities like using petrol, burning fires, and flying in planes heat up the earth which ultimately raises its temperature.

A rise in temperature takes place when greenhouse gases (such a carbon dioxide, water vapours, nitrous oxide, methane, etc) trap heat and light from our surroundings and sun. Ultimately, rise in temperature hurts the lives of human beings, animals, and plants. There are many reasons for the increasing global warming however some of the primary and main causes are directly caused by the Greenhouse Effect.

The absorbed heat remains in the lower circle of biosphere and enhances the temperature level. According to the statistics it has been estimated that by 2050 the rise in temperature of earth would be about 4°C to 5°C. In last five centuries, it has raised by about 1°C however half of this warming is raised only during the twentieth century. So, the global warming is at peak and alarms us regularly with its bad effects.

It is affecting almost all parts of the world and causing sea levels to rise, glaciers to melt (even in NZ), and drought. It is destroying huge forests, killing algae, making acid rain, etc. Acid rain is very dangerous which may destroy anything it touches. Global warming causes natural fires which may wipe out whole forests.

Continuous rise in the earth temperature affects agricultural crops, forests, marine life and life growth on the earth. It cannot be solved by the effort of only one country, it needs global effort of all countries to reduces its effects otherwise we are all facing big problems.

But it's not too late. You can help a little by burning wood instead of coal, using electronic cars, bike and walk and use solar power. I hope we can all do our bit! Thank you for listening.
